New Nicolet Certificates Expand Job training Options for Northwoods Residents

Nicolet College is offering two new short-term training certificates and creating an evening option for a third to further expand higher education options for Northwoods residents.

Classes will start this fall for certificates in Industrial Maintenance Fundamentals, Technical Communications, and the evening accelerated Supervisory Management certificate.

“Employers value the skills that go along with earning a college credential,” said Nicolet College President Elizabeth Burmaster. “Each of these certificates will give people an advantage when they are looking for employment or are seeking to advance in their current career.”

Fall Semester classes run from Tuesday, Sept. 4, to Friday, Dec. 21.

Certificates include:

Industrial Maintenance Fundamentals

Designed for those looking for entry level manufacturing positions as production workers or maintenance technicians, this 14-credit, five-class certificate will teach students safety fundamentals, the basics of hydraulics and pneumatics, electronic concepts, and college math. Graduates will have the skills to install, maintain and operate a wide variety of equipment that is common in manufacturing.

“We’ve worked closely with several area manufacturers to develop this certificate,” Burmaster explained. “These employers indicated that jobs are out there in this field for people with the right skills.”

 Technical Communication

Effective communication is essential in any workplace. Students in this certificate program will learn the skills to research, prepare, and distribute information about technical processes and products. The four courses required for the 10-credit certificate will cover technical reporting, desktop publishing, web page development, and report and proposal writing.

The certificate is designed for those whose work requires them to explain or document a process, write instructions and directions, or outline specifications.

Accelerated Evening Supervisory Management

This 12-credit, four-class certificate will be offered in an accelerated format with a new evening class starting every eight weeks. It’s designed for those seeking to advance in their existing career or seek new job opportunities. Graduates will have the skills to lead teams, manage workflow, resolve conflicts, guide and appraise employee work, and develop positive employee attitudes and culture.

Employers are looking for workers with the advanced skills taught in this certificate and state projections indicate this field will have among the most job openings in coming years.

Classes will meet on Mondays from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the Nicolet Campus and at the college’s Lakeland center. Online coursework will be required between class sessions.
