Antigo, Elcho Students Eye Forestry Industry

One of Langlade County’s key industries—forestry—was on display for area schoolchildren recently.

Over 250 students from Antigo and Elcho school districts got a first-hand look at modern logging at an educational day held at Crestwood School on Wednesday.

Marshall Forest Products provided all the equipment and demonstrations.  Students saw first-hand the operations of a how a forest is managed properly from tree identification to the processor, the forwarder, to the sawmill and heard a presentation on all the products manufactured from wood.

Other partners included were the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Antigo High School forestry Instructor Michael Werdeo, the Langlade County Forestry and Recreation Department and Langlade County Economic Development Corporation.

According to Angie Close, director of the economic development corporation, forestry and logging provide over 317 jobs in Langlade County  and have an output over $19 million.

Every $1 million in forestry creates $677,000 output in other sectors, she said.
